Murrabi Shariff Jiwa Surti was 18 when he arrived from Bhavnagar via Zanzibar in 1865.

He was a generous man locally and abroad and was mentioned frequently in local newspapers.

He communicated regularly with Alama Haji Gulamali Esmail (Haji Nagi) and was famous as the French Army gave him many business contracts.

The land on which the Masjid and Imambarghah of Diegoswarez in Madagascar were built was donated by Shariffbhai as "Waqf”.
